Residential Housing Systems

BrightFarm Systems designs resource efficient rooftop farms for medium to large scale, multi-unit residential housing developments. We work with developers to incorporate sustainable agricultural systems into new as well as existing residential housing developments.

Some developers chose to integrated food production onto the roof of their new development in order to provide the local community with its own, stable supply of fresh vegetables – often in areas where these are difficult to come by. Others wish simply to provide building residents with a state of the art building amenity.

BrightFarm Systems works with developers to develop innovative, community-based or commercial business models to support their rooftop greenhouse system.

Our systems are designed to work with building energy efficiency strategies earning additional LEED or BREAM points for the building. Greenhouses provide additional green space, reducing storm water runoff from the building and help mitigate the urban heat island effects.

Business and Operational Models

  • Systems can operate as wholly-owned and run building amenities (equivalent to a building gym, swimming pool, garden, etc.).
  • Systems over 10,000 – 15,000 sq ft, can be contracted out to a 3rd party operator as a standalone business or joint venture or run as a community supported agriculture (CSA) farm for the benefit of residents and/or the local community (fee based).

SCALE: Operations of 2,000 m2 (~22,000 ft2) for a commercial operation; smaller for a CSA model.
