Manhattan School For Children, USA

BrightFarm Systems has been commissioned to design an environmental education center and local food production facility on the roof of the Manhattan School for Children on the Upper West Side of New York City. The center will utilize hydroponic greenhouse technology, powered by renewable energy, to grow food in the heart of the city.

In addition to being a food production center, the rooftop learning laboratory will provide a unique facility for the learning of science concepts including plant science, nutrition and environmental sustainability.

The Sustainability Lab on the rooftop of PS 333 was created out of the school community’s desire to create a more sustainable campus and environmentally-focused curriculum. The lab will include a greenhouse featuring sustainable food production systems with differentiated planting zones for individual and grade projects, a composting center, insect growing areas, a weather station and an indoor classroom.

The Lab will feature Brightfarm Systems’ renewable energy technology and will utilize captured rainwater for irrigation needs. The greenhouse structure and accompanying developments will be built on the 3rd floor roof of the school and will require only minor alterations to the existing space.

The project is currently awaiting regularity approval and is scheduled for construction in 2009.
